Fraud Risk

There continues to be a rise in fraud and “cybercrime”. Weisberg Legal, its staff and clients can be targeted by fraudsters using fake emails, letters or phone calls. These scams take many forms and are increasingly sophisticated.

In an attempt to mitigate against such scams we have robust IT procedures in place including including frequent staff training on cyber security, multiple layers of anti virus / malware prevention, access controls such as multi factor authentication, use of the latest IT systems with back ups, and have completed the government backed Cyber Essentials Accreditation.

We are aware of the following current scams:

  • Email Impersonation

Fraudsters can email using similar looking email addresses such as jonsmith@lawyers.com instead of johnsmith@lawyer.com and may behind the scenes build up trust or a rapport with clients and then requests payment to be made into a fraudulent bank account.

  • Interception of emails

Hackers may intercept emails between individuals and their law firm using increasingly sophisticated attacks on email systems. The fraudster then requests payment to be made into a fraudulent bank account.

  • Phishing and vishing

Where a fraudster uses email or telephone to obtain confidential information. This often involves building a personal relationship with a victim and usually results in the request for money to be paid into a fraudulent bank account.

  • Malware

A harmful software that spies on or damages your IT. A particularly dangerous form, ransomware, encrypts files and demands a ransom in return for a decryption key.
